AI Action Summit 2025: Navigating AIxBio Governance Priorities

On February 10-11, 2025, world leaders and experts convened in Paris for the AI Action Summit to explore the future of artificial intelligence (AI) and its societal implications.

Focus on AIxBio Capabilities

During the Summit, NTI | bio collaborated with the RAND Corporation to host a side event focused on AIxBio capabilities—integrating AI with life sciences. This convergence poses significant risks and offers tremendous societal benefits.

The event aimed to:

  • Develop a framework identifying AI thresholds with biological risks.
  • Advance research on technical guardrails preventing misuse.
  • Facilitate AISI collaboration and resource sharing.

Importance of Governance and Collaboration

Dr. Jaime Yassif, NTI | bio Vice President, emphasized the necessity of robust governance and technical guardrails to harness AIxBio benefits, like rapid vaccine development, while mitigating misuse risks. She highlighted the role of AI Safety Institutes (AISIs) in addressing these priorities through industry and academic collaboration.

Discussions at the summit stressed the need for consensus among technical experts on defining unacceptable biological risks. Moreover, the expansion of the AISI International Network and involvement in the AIxBio Global Forum were considered crucial steps for progress.

Future Emphasis on Safety

AI safety remains a pivotal topic in international AI discussions, with NTI advocating for a strong emphasis on safety in future summits. This includes focusing on biosecurity and emerging AI-related issues in nuclear security.
